Awesome Gem Working Toward 7-Year-Old Campaign

The venerable gelding AWESOME GEM is back on the worktab, preparing for his fifth season of racing. The 7-year-old son of Awesome Again has raced each season since his sophomore year.

He posted a pair of bullet works within a two-week span. On February 5th, Awesome Gem worked three furlongs in a bullet :36.2 at Hollywood Park in just his second workout since finishing seventh behind champion Zenyatta in the Breeders’ Cup Classic (GI). He followed that workout with a nice half-furlong breeze in :48 on February 11th, the third-fastest of 11 that day. Then, on February 16th, Awesome Gem moved across Hollywood Park's main track in a brisk :59.8 for five furlongs, the fastest of 25 works that day.

Bred in partnership by Peter Callahan and Runnymede Farm, Awesome Gem has earned $1.69 million with a record of 30-6-11-3 for West Point Thoroughbreds. His last win was the GII Hawthorne Gold Cup leading up to the BC Classic. Overall, he has placed in four Grade I events, including a strong third in the BC Classic behind Horse of the Year Curlin in 2007.
