Juvenile Filly Laughing Lashes Captures Group 2 stakes

Trainer Jessica Harrington said Laughing Lashes “absolutely delighted” her with the impressive victory over eight rivals, including a four-strong entry from Ballydoyle, and may be aimed next at the Moyglare Stud Stakes (G1) on August 28 at the Curragh.

“She seems to be improving all the time, and I think that little bit of cut in the ground they had on Sunday helped her as she's a big filly,” said Harrington, adding that Laughing Lashes has earned her way to the Group 1 level.

“I hope she could be a Guineas filly next season and maybe even an Oaks filly, as I do think she'd stay," Harrington said of the gray daughter of Mr. Greeley and the Unbridled’s Song mare Adventure.

After tracking the pacesetters to the stretch in the seven-furlong Debutante, Laughing Lashes strode powerfully to the lead under Fran Berry, winning by a length over the Aidan O’Brien-trained Misty For Me, with the heavily favored Ballydoyle Group 3 winner Together another three lengths back in third. Laughing Lashes stopped the timer in 1:24.49 on a course rated yielding.

Runnymede will offer a half sister to Laughing Lashes in Book 1 at this year’s Keeneland September yearling sale. By promising freshman sire First Samurai, the yearling filly, catalogued as Hip 115 on Monday, September 13, is an outstanding individual.

“She is very correct, has a lot of quality and really has that classic look,” Runnymede Vice President and General Manager Martin O’Dowd of the First Samurai filly.

Runnymede sold Laughing Lashes for $100,000 at the 2009 Keeneland September sale. The filly runs in the silks of the McElroy Syndicate, whose members include Gillian Walsh, wife of Irish National Hunt champion jockey Ruby Walsh, and Ritchie Galway of Punchestown Racecourse.

Adventure, dam of the yearling filly and Laughing Lashes, is a winning half sister to Racing Post Trophy (G1) winner Palace Episode, who also was bred by Runnymede. Currently boarded in Ireland, Adventure is in foal to champion and top sire Dalakhani.
